When asked to bring yoga to our city’s first World Naked Bike Ride I was reluctant to say the least. I kept thinking about what the community would think… did I finally push the envelope too far? Not to mention I wasn’t even sure I had the balls to take a naked yoga class let alone teach one!
“Let me check a few things and get back to you” I replied, buying myself some time.
I presented the idea to one of our teachers who is all about body empowerment. I laugh at the end just incase she’s not feeling it…. maybe she’ll think I was joking? Halfway into explaining the focus body positivity, she says “Fuck yeah! I’m in!!” … so it was decided. We’re doing naked yoga!
Day of, the weather was absolutely perfect! We were blessed to have the Cooperage hosting us in their beautiful outdoor courtyard next to the river… Can you imagine?!
I arrived about an hour early. I remember thinking there’s no way anyone is naked already. I turn into the parking lot and EVERYONE WAS NAKED! I had to quickly adjust because almost immediately, I run into the event coordinator I was working with and meeting for the first time …. totally naked. lol
As awkward as I was, he was totally cool and really accommodating to make sure we had everything we needed for class. Before class, I went in the bathroom and stripped down to my bra and underwear (that was as bare as I dared).
As the teacher was getting ready, I settled into my mat and for the first time took in my environment. Although people were fully nude, there wasn’t anything sexual about it… and seeing other imperfect people just like me so comfortable in their skin was incredibly inspiring!
In that space it didn’t matter how anyone looked; our flaws, our imperfections, none of that mattered. We were just there, in the raw, baring all and it was so very empowering!
We now host monthly Bare As You Dare Yoga… but register early because they sell out fast!
